Ray's Monthly Message

February 2008

I was wondering about the weather. Moving down from the north, we have expected things to be milder. The last few days have been windy and cold and someone said to me we should not be surprised it was colder again; it was only February. The month of March is often said to come in like a lion and (hopefully) leave like a lamb.

Easter is early this year. It is not often in March but the date all depends on the moon. I want to tell you how my thoughts travelled from the weather to the religious. Do you remember the film coming out of C. S. Lewis’ famous book, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”? Perhaps you have read the book or seen the movie. There is a lion called Aslan in the story. He is the children’s protector, always there when really needed and represents Jesus Christ in our own lives. When he comes into the story he is strong and the children are a little afraid of this new animal. By the end he shows his meekness and, weak as a lamb, allows himself to be killed for the safety of everyone else.

Jesus also is full of strength but in March Christians all over will be remembering his willingness to die for our sakes, to suffer the cruel punishment of the Roman cross. The part that sends us back to praising God is that two days later, on “the third day”, he had overcome death; Easter had come.

Whatever the weather this March, leonine or lamblike, we will be bounding quickly like a lion towards Easter. We may have little time to remember the one who declared he was the lamb (like the hundreds sacrificed in the Jewish temple) willing to die for us.  But take a little time if you can. Then the joy of Easter may have a deeper meaning for you this year.
